Daija View: Mothers of the Earth, May Day and the Heart of Abundance…

Mother’s Day means many things… but at the core is the embrace of the one who bore you…
May is a wonderful month filled with the abundance of celebrating the first day of May, or “May Day”, as the worker’s holiday, and was selected in 1889 as a world labor holiday to show support for labor activism in the United States. As time progressed, the US dropped this celebration choosing another day in September, known as “Labor Day” to celebrate the eight-hour work day. May Day’s first celebration originated in the spring fertility festivals of India and Egypt. The festival of the Roman goddess of spring, Flora, was celebrated from Apr. 28 to May 3. In medieval England the chief feature of the celebration of May Day was the Maypole; this was decorated with flowers and streamers, the loose ends of which were held by dancers, who colourfully circled around the pole, weaving intricate patterns as they passed each other in their celebratory dance. These dances are still performed for exhibition purposes in England and the United States. The Second Socialist International in 1889 designated May Day as the holiday for labor, and since that time it has been the occasion for demonstrations, parades, and speeches among socialists and communists. And of course, we all celebrate the love of all Mothers on Earth, and honor Mother Earth, herself.

What is the origin of ‘Mother’s Day’? It is observed in many countries around our World because it has a number of different meanings. In Ancient Asian religions, Cybele was honored as the Great Mother Goddess. In the fifth centrury BC, her cult was introduced to Greece, honoring her with a great bountiful festival. The Romans had a holiday called Matronalia on which all Mothers were given gifts.
“Mothering Sunday,” an observance in the United Kingdom falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday. It is thought to have originated in the middle ages when Christians visited their mother church once a year — that meant that most mothers were reunited with their children on that day.
And in the United States… Mother’s Day began as a call to unite women against war. Social activist Julia Ward Howe, after the American Civil War wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” in 1870 — a short statement urging the forsaking of violence, “Whereby the great human family can live in peace.” Today, some organizations are working to revive Howe’s original vision of a holiday that celebrates peacemaking by Mothers and others. Around the world Mothers have always stood for peace, an important fact to remember as our own nation continues in a war in the middle east.
Just as we were all born of Mothers, so the earth has been the nourishing lady that sustains us through our lives. You may have heard of the concept of “Gaia” — the earth as a living being, where some scientists have proposed that the living and nonliving parts of the earth form a complex system that can be thought of as a single organism.
Remember the old TV commercial, where an angry Goddess whips up a storm with lightning and thunder, and shouts “it’s not nice to fool Mother Nature?” Words of wisdom — maybe Al Gore also remembers that commercial, as he travels about promoting his Global warming theories. We’ll all do well, as we honor our own Mothers, to go kind on this old lady Earth that provides all of the food and abundance in our lives.
Seems kind of “heavy” even contradictory that the month of May that begins as a celebration of Peace and Mothers of Peace, then by tracing the celebrations of May back to modern day global warming, war, and labor riots, what has become of Mother Earth? On a lighter note, May also brings wonderful warm, balmy evenings in which romance and the finer intrigues of life can bloom and grow, at least this is true in the US and Canada. Australian readers are celebrating their Fall Season now, with cooler crisp air, and of course love finds us all, regardless of the season of the year.
And in every season, we can gaze into its depths, like meditating before a warm fire, and see many of the passions of life passing before our eyes. It’s that way in the heavens, as is so on our Earth. Every Mother can hold her child close in comfort and compassion as she grows in spiritually supernatural wisdom beyond the ways of our earthly world, celebrating her offspring in her warm loving bosom from some of the weary discord, fostering a calm peaceful harmony in the wild hearts of man.
That is my prayer for you — that your Mother hold you fast in that sacred place where her heart of life gives abundant love.

Yes, VENUS is so at home here and now, and it’s all about creature comforts, beautiful florals, the sweet scent of spring, and pastel tanks, tops and polos, shorts, strappy shoes and sandals! Rock and roll, but pace yourself my darling Venus kids, as this is one heckova fun and romantic month ahead. Mark the 8th on your calendar as the romantic flare ignites the ‘flames’ that torch your nites into treats shared by two — yes, it’s you and you know who! That’s right, your entire celebratory month ahead is all about love, happiness, joy; and especially creating, having and finding fun. The new moon on the 16th grabs your attention with an irritation due to you noticing additional interest from others directed toward your new flame. Oouch… you feel the sting of competition. Say what you think and feel. And do so kindly, of course. No worries, you’ve sealed the deal on this one. Time for Confidence, savvy, and a positive attitude in all you do pertaining to love, as you know exactly how to woo your way with words of affirmation, laughter and good cheer. This inner knowledge keeps you in first place. Remember to take action with those words, show her/him that you’re the real deal. No better time than now to make a committment, so go for it! It’s Freedom from dependency this month, as you travel into the love arena with friends and possibly even those once regarded as foes. Oh No… No… NO! this could get Hot and Steamy, and especially saucy as your buttons are being pushed, in all the right places and you’re not at all adversarial but politely pushing back, and perfectly so! Good news, as you two conversationally progress. It’s all about your willingness toward honest discussion, details, and talking about what and how you feel, that brings everything full circle as you approach mid month. Opposites attract and you’re both intact, as your birthday season arrives with invitations galore and you’re about to romantically explore! Business looks good. You’re back on track, and about to step out into the limelight. Bow to your audience, and remember to smile! It’s count down time for you moon children with Venus entering your sign on the 8th and lingering there throughout the month and into the first week of June. Chances are you’ll decide your fate. And it’s looking good for commitment, but you’ve actually considered calling it quits. Your ice cold feet tend to have you a tad upset about what you may think you could be missing and you’re thinking “am I sure about this”?? Keep a cool head and don’t verbalize your feelings just yet. Examine your thoughts, and perhaps seek wise counsel before speaking your truth, or at least what you perceive as your truth. As you could be confused. Before you go off half cocked into a fanatical frenzie, blowing everything into the water, talk about your fears with a mentor or a professional. It’s much more difficult to stop and think and analyze now, than to have to clean up your mess later on. People from all over will be seeking what you’ve to sell, regardless of the service, product, or merchandise. Whoa nellie, if you’re in retail sales, as this will be like Christmas in May! You’ll enjoy travel, for both business and pleasure, as well as making great strides in linking professional contacts, that will eventually turn into personal and even romantic connections later on. Never in your wildest dreams have you seen such great opportunity, and well, it’s all up to you now, by chooing to honor most what you do best. There’s a slight possibility that you’re thinking and considering the past and how your behaviors have perhaps limited you.
