Daija View: The Wonder of Cycles, Systems & Calendars…

Once again the old calendar has rolled around into the Holiday season with Thanksgiving just past and Christmas on the wing. Here’s wishing your Thanksgiving found you at peace with your loved ones, and for more Holiday cheer throughout the good times ahead.

In the history of Calendars, the cycles of nature are synchronized and shown in periods. It’s interesting to note some different sorts of calendars:

• The Islamic Calendar is synchronized to the motion of the Moon
• The Persian Calendar is synchronized to the apparent motion of the Sun
• The ancient Egyptian Calendar was synchronized to the motion of Venus
• The Jewish Calendar is synchronized to both the motion of the Moon and apparent motion of the Sun (called a “lunisolar calendar”)

Then there’s the Mayan Calendar, which was a system of some complexity involving a lot of mathematics, spiritual theories, and belief systems. Most folks are aware that the Mayan Calendar is supposed to “end” in 2012. But this did not actually foretell the end of the world, as some have stated, but rather a new beginning or time of re-birth. The controversial Mel Gibson explores this in his film that is in theaters now. I believe that 2012, from the look of current world events, is shaping up to be a pivitol year. Let’s pray for God’s blessings and for new and peaceful beginnings at that time.

In our modern calendars, the weekly cycle used is not precisely synchronized to any external phenomenon. This is why I like to show the phases of the moon on my calendars — not because I’m Islamic, by the way — because the moon plays a prominent role in Astrology.

Where did our calendar system come from? It is known as the “Gregorian calendar” and was devised in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. Its years are numbered based on the traditional birth year of Jesus (AD – Anno Domini). It has become the widest used calendar system in the world. It is interesting to read more about the history of the calendar during which many countries, and even Alaska for a number of years used a different system and thus were out of synch with the rest of the world. Remember the lyrics in the old Chicago song, Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is… they also asked, “Does any body really know what day it is?” Reading about calendar development really does make you wonder.

But that’s the beauty of looking at the underlying order of things, and a nice segway into the Christmas season, where we are all called upon to wonder once again and regain the hope and perhaps even some of the childlike innocence and belief in our fellow men. Even though, to this day, some churches have refused to accept the Gregorian calendar and so celebrate the nativity on January 7th (as it was marked in the old Julian calendar), the important thing is that they do celebrate it. Our Gregorian calendar is also known to “slip” a bit mathematically over time which we try to correct with “leap years”, but even so still carries within it an error of about one day per 3300 years.

Albeit there are still differences, our calendar system(s) and Christmas are based on the observance of the Spiritual truths of this World. As is Astrology. And just as there are different calendar systems, too, there are different systems in Astrology. What to believe? I think that we can see that human devised systems are imperfect, and so I put my faith in the source of the calendar’s inspiration itself — the visit of God here on earth, incarnated as a human being, just like you and me, and oh, about 2,000 years ago.

This brings us full cycle back to Christmas, and for that day and this season, I wish you the best of the Spirit of wonder, peace, happiness and goodwill toward human beings, today and always.
